Treatment methods for dental anxiety in Amsterdam

If you are afraid of the dentist, this could prevent you from receiving treatment. However, you are not alone in experiencing this fear; it is estimated that approximately 25% of Dutch people share it. Unlike most dental practices, we can treat you with sedatives. If you are very nervous or afraid of visiting the dentist, being given something to calm you down can help.

  • We offer all dental treatments in one trusted location.
  • We offer extra time, personal attention and clear explanations at every step.
  • We use calm treatment methods with a complete focus on comfort and safety.

The intake interview

To get to know each other better, we schedule an initial interview. During this interview, we will not treat your teeth; instead, we will try to find out what is causing your fear. We will then discuss the possible treatment methods with you. At iSmile, you can choose from laughing gas sedation, light anaesthesia or sedative pills

Our approach

At iSmile Dental Practice, we believe that our patients should always know where they stand. Read on to find out exactly what to expect from us.

Laughing gas sedation

If you choose this option, we will place a mask over your nose through which you will breathe in a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide. This combination will relax you and ensure that you do not experience any stress during the procedure. You will remain fully conscious with nitrous oxide sedation.

Light anaesthesia

If we need to perform more extensive treatment, you can opt for light anaesthesia. With this method, you will be unconscious. Therefore, it is mandatory that an anaesthetist is present during the procedure. Once the procedure is over, you can recover at your own pace.

Sedatives

Of course, it is possible that laughing gas sedation will not be sufficient and you will still want to remain conscious during the treatment. In that case, you can opt for certain sedatives. One drug we use frequently is Dormicum. This drug ensures that you remain conscious but are largely unaware of the procedure.

Tips for feeling relaxed when you enter the practice

There are a number of things you can do to ensure that you enter the clinic feeling relaxed.

  • Plan a fun activity to do after your treatment. This will shift your focus away from the treatment and onto the fun activity.
  • Find some breathing exercises that you can do when you start to feel anxious in the treatment room.
  • Bring your smartphone and earphones so you can listen to music during the treatment. This will help you to focus more on the music than the treatment.

Post-treatment tips

  • Make sure you schedule a new appointment immediately after your treatment. This will make it more difficult to postpone.

Breaks during treatment

Are you afraid of the dentist? You can let us know when you make an appointment. We will then schedule more time so that we have room for breaks. If you want to remain conscious during a procedure, you can easily indicate if you would like to take a break. We will pause the treatment so that you can relax.

Reimbursement for dental anxiety

The extent to which treatment is reimbursed depends on your health insurer. Please contact your health insurer for information about reimbursements.
