Laughing gas sedation in Amsterdam: iSmile

Does the thought of visiting the dentist make you nervous? With laughing gas sedation, we provide a safe and effective way to relax during treatment. You breathe in a mixture of oxygen and laughing gas through a mask over your nose, which makes you feel calm and comfortable. You will remain fully conscious, but you will experience the treatment as much less intense. Once the treatment is complete, the effect of the nitrous oxide disappears immediately, leaving you completely clear-headed.

  • It’s a great solution for anxious patients.

What is nitrous oxide sedation?

During the procedure, you will be given a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide through a face mask. You continue to breathe normally. After a few minutes, you will begin to feel the effects of the nitrous oxide. This has a calming effect, enabling you to undergo the treatment in a relaxed state. You will remain conscious, but your perception will become less acute. This alleviates your anxiety. While the nitrous oxide is being administered, you will be closely monitored. We will pay close attention to your breathing and how you respond to the sedation. Our specialists administer nitrous oxide safely and reliably.

How does nitrous oxide sedation work?

During the procedure, the patient is given a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide via a mask covering their nose or mouth. This mixture contains at least 50% oxygen. The practitioner can then slowly increase the percentage of nitrous oxide in the mixture until the optimal ratio of nitrous oxide to oxygen is reached. At this level, the patient will feel much calmer and more relaxed, yet still be conscious.

Are there any side effects?

Administering nitrous oxide is a safe and child-friendly procedure. The mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen creates a safe form of intoxication that causes patients to lose their concerns about the treatment. Patients may experience euphoria or a laughing fit.

How does nitrous oxide sedation treatment work?

It is administered in several stages during your treatment. We will be happy to explain this to you in detail beforehand. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our specialists by phone on 020 – 218 42 57.

Phase 1: Preparation

We will explain what is involved in nitrous oxide sedation. For example, we recommend that you avoid eating a heavy meal before your appointment. On the day of the treatment, we will talk you through what the dentist will do. Once the oxygen mask is in place, the procedure can begin.

Phase 2: Administering Nitrous Oxide Sedation

A mixture of nitrous oxide and pure oxygen is released through the oxygen mask. Breathe this in calmly and the rest will happen automatically. You will find yourself in a relaxed and calm state. Although you will remain conscious throughout the entire treatment, you will hardly notice what is happening.

Phase 3: Treatment Complete

Once treatment is complete, we will stop administering nitrous oxide via the air mask. You will keep the mask on and continue to breathe in clean air. Your consciousness will slowly return to normal. We will then assess whether the nitrous oxide has completely worn off. This will ensure that you can safely participate in traffic again afterwards.

Would nitrous oxide sedation be suitable for me?

Do you feel anxious about dental treatment? If so, nitrous oxide sedation could provide a comfortable solution. Thanks to our anxiety dentist’s professional approach, using nitrous oxide is completely safe and risk-free. He takes the time to carry out the treatment so that you feel at ease.

We recommend nitrous oxide sedation for patients who:

  • Patients who are afraid of the dentist or stressed about treatment.
  • People who find it difficult to lie still in the dentist’s chair for long periods of time.
  • Children who are tense or anxious during treatment.
  • Patients with a strong gag reflex.
  • People who need to undergo extensive or invasive treatment.

Is nitrous oxide not the right solution for you? Light anaesthesia is also an option.

Is anything covered by insurance?

You can submit dental costs for the administration of nitrous oxide under codes B10, B11 or B12. In most cases, basic insurance covers this. The practitioner submits an authorisation to the insurer for reimbursement of the incurred costs.
