Implantology Amsterdam

Have you lost a tooth? Our implantology treatment restores both the function and appearance of your teeth. An implant is an artificial root made of titanium that replaces the natural tooth root. We then attach a crown, bridge or snap-on denture to it so that you can eat, talk and laugh with confidence again. Our experienced implantologist will create a personalised treatment plan for you and guide you through the process step by step. Thanks to the relaxed atmosphere in our practice, you’ll quickly feel at ease, safe in the knowledge that you’re receiving the best care.

What is implantology?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium. This safe, permanent replacement for a tooth root is placed in the jawbone. Crowns, bridges or dentures can then be attached to the implant.

Implantology is an effective solution for:

  • Replacing a single tooth with a crown.
  • Replacing multiple teeth with a fixed bridge.
  • Replacing an entire set of teeth with a full bridge or snap-on denture.

How is an implant placed?

To help you prepare for the treatment, we will talk you through the process step by step. During the procedure, the implantologist will explain each step as it is performed. If any part of the process is unclear, please feel free to contact our dental practice in Amsterdam. Our staff will be happy to help.

Step 1: The consultation

Before an implant can be placed, a dental examination must be conducted. This involves an oral inspection and a panoramic X-ray. The X-ray shows both the upper and lower jaws, enabling us to evaluate the position of the tooth roots and confirm whether there is sufficient jawbone. Your oral health will also be assessed and any potential issues discussed. Following this, the dentist will create a customised treatment plan, including a cost estimate, to ensure there are no unexpected surprises.

Step 2: Implant placement

Under local anaesthetic or light sedation, the implantologist inserts the implant into the jawbone. This involves making a small incision in the gum and drilling a hole into the jawbone. The artificial root made of titanium is then screwed into place. Finally, the dentist closes the gum with dissolvable sutures.

Step 3: The healing period

To ensure the implant fuses securely with the jawbone, we allow for a healing period of approximately six to twelve weeks, also known as the osseointegration phase. During this time, a temporary crown, bridge or snap-on denture is placed on the implant. This allows you to gradually get used to the filled ‘gap’ in your mouth.

Step 4: Fitting the crown, bridge or snap-on denture

Once the permanent prosthesis has been fitted, we will arrange a follow-up appointment. Depending on the type of prosthesis, this will be after three, six or eleven months. During the check-up, we will take a new panoramic X-ray and examine your mouth thoroughly.

Step 5: Filling the Canals

Once the canals have been thoroughly cleaned, they are filled. In some cases, the tooth may be so severely damaged that a crown or bridge is necessary.

Step 6: Follow-up Care

Once the permanent prosthesis has been placed, we will schedule a follow-up appointment. Depending on the type of prosthesis, this appointment will take place after three, six, or eleven months. During the checkup, we will take a new panoramic X-ray and perform a thorough examination of your mouth.

Is it always possible to place an implant?

Implants can only be placed once the jawbone has fully matured. This usually occurs around the age of 18. You must also meet the following requirements:

  • There is sufficient jawbone.
  • The gums and jawbone are healthy.

These factors are assessed through an oral examination and a panoramic X-ray. If there is insufficient jawbone, the implantologist may choose to fill the missing areas with synthetic bone graft material.

Cost of an implant

The Dutch Healthcare Authority sets the costs associated with implant placement annually. For the most up-to-date prices, please visit our pricing page. You can find the costs under code J in the PDF.

Health insurer reimbursement

Even if you are under 18 years of age, basic health insurance does not cover implants, crowns or bridges. A snap-on denture, however, is covered by basic health insurance. To be eligible for full reimbursement of an implant, crown or bridge, you must purchase additional dental insurance. Check with your health insurer to see if your implant treatment is covered.
