Root Canal Treatment in Amsterdam

Root canal treatment is necessary when the root canal of a tooth becomes inflamed. This can be caused by a cavity, a leaking filling or an impact from a hard blow or fall. It is important to treat this inflammation quickly, as it will not heal on its own. Without treatment, the pain can increase and spread to the jawbone. Would you like to have your teeth checked? Make an appointment or register as a new patient. We have a special dentist who specialises in treating dental anxiety and will calmly guide anxious patients through the procedure.

What is root canal treatment?

Every tooth has a root canal containing nerves and blood vessels. If this tissue becomes inflamed, it can cause severe pain and damage. During root canal treatment, the dentist carefully cleans the canal and removes the inflamed tissue. The canal is then filled and sealed to preserve the tooth and prevent the inflammation from returning. This enables your tooth to function healthily again without persistent pain.

Is it always possible to perform root canal treatment?

In some cases, it may not be possible because there are other dental issues in addition to an infected root canal. For example, the tooth may need to be extracted. Your dentist will discuss this with you thoroughly and offer a suitable solution. One option is to place a bridge so that you don’t end up with a gap in your mouth.

Root Canal Treatment: A Step-by-Step Guide

To help you feel prepared for your root canal treatment, we’ll walk you through the procedure step by step.

Step 1: Taking X-rays

We take X-rays of your teeth before treatment to determine the number of roots and root canals. This also enables us to assess the orientation of the roots, ensuring that we can proceed with precision.

Step 2: Anesthesia

Before we open up the gum to clean the affected root canal, you can opt for local anesthesia. If the nerve is dead, this may not be necessary, but the choice is always yours. We also offer nitrous oxide sedation, light sedation, and sedative pills.

Step 3: Accessing the tooth

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the dentist will make a small hole in the tooth. This allows them to remove the infected tissue.

Step 4: Cleaning the root canals

We open and widen the canals using a special file to clean them. This allows us to rinse the canals with a disinfectant solution.

Step 5: Filling the Canals

Once the canals have been thoroughly cleaned, they are filled. In some cases, the tooth may be so severely damaged that a crown or bridge is necessary.

Step 6: Aftercare

The tooth will heal on its own following root canal treatment. It may feel sensitive for about four to five days after the procedure. You can take painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol to manage this.

Special care for anxious patients

We understand that a visit to the dentist can be nerve-wracking for many people. That’s why we have a dentist who specialises in treating anxious patients and will devote extra time and attention to your comfort. They are experienced in helping patients with dental anxiety and will discuss with you the approach that works best for you.

  • Nitrous oxide sedation: With the help of nitrous oxide, you’ll feel calm and relaxed during treatment. You will remain conscious, but experience less tension and anxiety.
  • Light sedation: Would you prefer not to be aware of the treatment at all? Then light sedation is the option for you. You’ll sleep peacefully while the dentist carries out the procedure.
  • Sedatives: Our dentist can prescribe sedatives such as Dormicum. You will remain awake, but you will remember little of the treatment afterwards and you will feel calmer.

Thanks to these options, a visit to the dentist is possible for everyone, even those who suffer from dental anxiety. Simply make an appointment or read more about our anxiety-friendly dentistry.
