Inflamed Gums

Healthy gums are pink in colour and do not bleed when brushed. Unfortunately, poor oral hygiene can sometimes cause the gums to become inflamed. In that case, the gums are often redder, swollen and prone to bleeding when brushing and flossing. It is important to treat gum inflammation immediately to prevent it from getting worse. Types of gum inflammation

Gum inflammation can be either mild or severe. If the gums are only slightly inflamed, this is referred to as gingivitis. If the gums are severely inflamed, it is called periodontitis. We are happy to explain the difference to you.

Gingivitis

We often recognise gingivitis by the redness, swelling and sensitivity to touch of the gums, as well as bad breath. For instance, your gums may bleed when you brush your teeth.

Treatment method

We treat gingivitis by carrying out a professional teeth cleaning, during which we carefully remove all the plaque and tartar. We also provide advice on improving your oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing techniques. With the right care, your gums can recover fully and become healthy again.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a serious gum disease that develops when gingivitis is left untreated. The inflammation then spreads to deeper tissues and the jawbone. This can result in the gums receding and the teeth becoming loose. Patients often only notice symptoms at a late stage, such as bad breath, sensitive teeth or receding gums. If left untreated, periodontitis can ultimately lead to permanent tooth loss and affect overall health.

Treatment method

In cases of periodontitis, we clean beneath the gums where the inflammation is often located. We use special instruments to remove bacteria and tartar. We sometimes take X-rays to determine the severity of the condition.

Symptoms of inflamed gums

We have already described the most common symptoms above, but will list them all for you below.

  • Red gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Lots of plaque, tartar and cavities
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold food
  • Bad breath
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth

Causes of inflamed gums

Inflamed gums are usually caused by a combination of factors. The main cause is the accumulation of plaque along the edge of the teeth, but other habits and circumstances also play a role. Some common causes are:

  • Inadequate oral hygiene, such as not brushing or flossing enough;
  • Smoking reduces blood flow to the gums.
  • A diet high in sugar or acidic products;
  • Stress, which lowers resistance and promotes inflammation.
  • Hormonal changes, for example during pregnancy or the menopause.
  • Genetic predisposition, which makes some people more susceptible to gum disease.
