Dental sealants in Amsterdam

Good oral hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing and controlling your sugar intake, is the key to healthy teeth. However, there is an additional way to protect your teeth even better against cavities: sealing. At iSmile Dental Practice, we apply a thin layer of protective material called a sealant to the chewing surfaces of your molars. This strengthens the enamel and makes it harder for bacteria to adhere. The result is long-lasting protection that can make a big difference, especially for children and young people.

What is tooth sealing?

It is a preventive dental treatment involving the application of a thin, transparent plastic layer to the molars. This layer, known as a ‘sealant’, fills in the small grooves and pits on the chewing surface of the teeth, making it harder for plaque and bacteria to build up there. This provides extra protection for the enamel against cavities while enabling the molars to retain their natural function. The procedure is completely painless and particularly helps children and young people to keep their permanent teeth healthy.

The advantages of tooth sealing:

  • Extra protection for tooth enamel against cavities.
  • It is a simple, completely painless treatment.
  • It provides long-lasting protection that lasts for years.
  • It is particularly suitable for children and young people with new permanent molars.
  • It reduces the risk of tooth decay in grooves and pits that are difficult to clean.

Who is dental sealing suitable for?

It is mainly used for children and young people because the permanent molars of this age group often have deep grooves in which plaque can easily accumulate. Sealing these grooves with a protective layer significantly reduces the risk of cavities. However, it can also be useful for adults, for example, if their molars are particularly vulnerable or difficult to clean.

It is particularly suitable for:

  • Children and young people with new permanent molars.
  • Adults at increased risk of cavities.
  • People with deep grooves or pits in their molars.
  • Patients wanting extra preventive protection for their teeth.

How we seal your teeth: the treatment

We seal your teeth in the following steps:

Step 1: cleaning and etching the teeth

It is important that the surface to be treated is clean first of all. The first step is therefore to clean your teeth. To ensure the sealant adheres well, the dentist will roughen the surface with an acidic liquid or gel. This process is also referred to as ‘etching’.

Step 2: rinsing and drying

After a short period of time, we rinse the liquid or gel away with water. We often use an air or water spray for this. The saliva ejector will then remove the excess water from your mouth. As moisture reduces the sealant’s adhesion to the tooth, cotton rolls are placed in your mouth.

Step 3: sealing

Now that the teeth are clean and dry, we apply the sealant. This is a very thin liquid that fills the grooves and pits on your teeth to prevent bacteria from settling in these areas.

Step 4: hardening the sealant

As the sealant is still liquid, it can easily come into contact with your tongue or gums. To prevent this, we harden it using a special blue lamp.

Step 5: final check

We perform a final check to make sure the sealant is in the right place. We then remove the saliva ejector and cotton rolls. You have now completed the treatment.

Costs for tooth sealing

Basic insurance covers the costs of sealing permanent teeth for children. For adults, it may be possible to claim back some of the costs through supplementary dental insurance. Please contact your insurance company for more information. The NZa sets rates for dental treatments such as tooth sealing on an annual basis. See our rate overview for an indication of the costs.
