Flap surgery

If you have periodontitis, the pockets around your teeth may be so deep that they cannot be reached effectively during a regular dental cleaning. This can result in plaque and tartar remaining, perpetuating the inflammation. In such cases, flap surgery may be necessary. During this procedure, the gum tissue is temporarily lifted to allow the pockets to be thoroughly cleaned.

What is a flap procedure?

It is also known as gum surgery. In cases of severe gum inflammation, the affected tissue can be difficult to access, which allows plaque to accumulate. In such cases, the dentist must make an incision in the gum tissue and lift it aside. The inflamed tissue is then removed and your teeth are cleaned to ensure all tartar and plaque is eliminated. Once the inflammation has cleared and your teeth are clean, our periodontist sutures your gum back into place and secures it with a dressing.

The benefits of flap surgery:

  • Thorough cleaning of deep pockets that would otherwise be inaccessible.
  • Reduction of inflammation and improvement of gum health.
  • It preserves teeth that might otherwise be lost.
  • It is performed by an experienced periodontist.

Aftercare following a flap procedure

After the procedure, you should rinse with mouthwash and take care when brushing your teeth. However, it is important that you continue to brush your teeth to prevent new plaque and tartar from causing inflammation of the gums. Please come in for at least two follow-up visits so that we can remove any stubborn tartar professionally and promptly.

Cost of flap surgery

If you are under 18, this surgery is covered by your basic health insurance plan. If you are over 18, however, this surgery is no longer covered. In this case, you will have to pay for it yourself, unless you have additional dental insurance. The cost of flap surgery varies from year to year. Therefore, please check our price list for the current costs.

When it comes to periodontitis, prevention is better than a cure.

Flap surgery can often be avoided by treating gum inflammation early on. By practising proper oral hygiene, you can keep your gums healthy and significantly reduce your risk of developing periodontitis. Here are a few tips:

  • Brush thoroughly twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use interdental brushes or floss daily to clean between your teeth.
  • Avoid smoking, as it increases the risk of gum disease.
  • Schedule regular check-ups with your dentist and dental hygienist.

Your dental hygienist plays an important role in preventing and treating gum inflammation. Professional dental cleanings will keep your teeth and gums in optimal condition.
