What are crowns and bridges?

A crown is a porcelain cap that replaces a broken or discoloured tooth. The dentist glues the crown to the tooth to replace it. If you are missing a tooth, the dentist will first insert an implant and then attach the crown to it. If you are missing several teeth, you may be eligible for a bridge. A bridge connects the adjacent existing teeth. The dentist clicks the bridge onto these teeth, closing the gap.

When is it appropriate to have a crown or bridge fitted?

Having a crown or bridge fitted is an appropriate solution when:

  • Part of your tooth has rotted away due to tooth decay;
  • Chewing is difficult because you are missing teethy;
  • Our teeth are crooked;
  • Your tooth is discoloured.

How does the process of fitting a crown or bridge work?

We believe it is important that you are well prepared for your treatment, so we will explain the process step by step beforehand. Your dentist will also inform and guide you throughout the procedure. Do you have any questions about the process? Please feel free to contact us. Our staff will be happy to help!

Step 1: grinding down the tooth

For a crown or bridge to fit properly, it is important that the tooth is ground down. To achieve this, the dentist will grind down part of your tooth. This is done under anaesthesia, so you won’t feel anything during the procedure

Step 2: making an impression

After grinding, we take an impression of your teeth using rubber-like material and an impression tray. The dental laboratory then uses this impression to pour plaster. They use this plaster model to create a customised crown or bridge.

Step 3: bite registration

Next, the dentist will take a bite registration to assess how your teeth fit together. This will give them a clear idea of the height of the crown or bridge, as well as the shape of the chewing and cutting surfaces.

Step 4: determining the right colour

We will consult with you to select the perfect shade. This is done using a colour chart to ensure the colour matches your other teeth perfectly.

Step 5: temporary emergency restoration

As your tooth or bridge is being customised by the dental laboratory, we will place a temporary restoration. This protects the ground tooth or molar. Your crown or bridge should be ready after an average of three weeks. The second treatment will take place after this time.

Step 6: placing the crown or bridge

During the second treatment, we will place your permanent crown or bridge. We apply quick-setting cement to the inside, before sliding the crown or bridge into place.
