In some cases of periodontitis, the pockets are very deep, making them difficult to reach. This means that plaque and tartar can remain behind after dental cleaning. To clean these pockets, flap surgery is required. This involves operating on the gums and is performed by our experienced periodontist.

The treatment

We perform flap surgery under local anaesthetic. Once the anaesthetic has taken full effect, we loosen and move the gums aside. This exposes the inflamed tissue. We then remove this tissue to make the jawbone and the roots of the teeth clearly visible. Finally, we remove any remaining plaque and tartar.

Advantages and disadvantages of flap surgery

The main advantage of flap surgery is that it enables us to completely remove the inflammation. Another advantage is that the pockets between the gums and teeth become shallower. This makes them easier to clean.

One disadvantage of flap surgery is that the gums may recede slightly. This can make the teeth more sensitive. You can buy toothpaste for sensitive teeth to reduce this sensitivity.

What is flap surgery?

It is also known as gum surgery. In cases of severe gum inflammation, the affected tissue is difficult to access, which can lead to plaque accumulation. In such cases, the dentist will need to open up part of the gums and move them aside. We will then remove the inflamed tissue and clean your teeth to remove all tartar and plaque. Once the inflammation has been removed and your teeth are clean, our periodontist will close your gums and secure them with a dressing.

Aftercare for flap surgery

After the procedure, you will need to rinse with mouthwash and take care when brushing your teeth. It is important that you continue to brush your teeth regularly to prevent new plaque and tartar building up and causing further inflammation of the gums. Attend at least two follow-up appointments so that we can remove stubborn tartar professionally and promptly.

Flap surgery costs

If you are under 18, the surgery will be covered by your basic health insurance package. If you are over 18, this surgery will not be covered. In this case, you will have to pay the costs yourself, unless you have additional dental insurance. The cost of flap surgery varies each year. Please check our price list for the current costs.

Preventing flap surgery

Taking good care of your teeth every day can help to prevent the need for flap surgery. This means brushing and flossing twice a day. Flossing removes food debris from between your teeth. This keeps your gums healthy. Good oral hygiene also reduces the risk of unpleasant infections in your mouth.
