Causes of receding gums

Receding gums can sometimes be genetic. However, there are other potential causes:

  • Brushing or flossing too aggressively
  • Seriously crooked teeth
  • Damaged gums
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Crowns or implants

How to prevent receding gums

If your gums are only slightly receding, you can try repairing them at home by following these steps:

  • Use a soft toothbrush and massage your gums in a circular motion.
  • Floss your teeth daily, taking care not to push your gums further back.
  • Use mouthwash to heal any inflamed gums.

What is gum correction?

Receding gums are also known as gingival recession. This condition exposes the roots of the teeth. This can result in the deterioration of tooth quality and even tooth loss. Receding gums often lead to sensitivity to hot food and drinks, among other issues. Gum correction remedies these problems and improves the appearance of the teeth. We remove excess gum tissue by burning it away and restore receding gums using a transplant.

Gum correction treatment

The treatment depends on the problem. At iSmile Tandartspraktijk, we can help with the following issues.

Reducing upper lip muscles and loosening the upper lip

The gums and upper lip may be strongly attached to each other. This can cause the gums to be visible when smiling. We remedy this problem by loosening the connection between the upper lip and the gums

Botox treatment for a gummy smile

We paralyse certain muscles by injecting Botox into the upper lip. This causes the upper lip to droop slightly, revealing less of the gums.

Excess gum can be burned away

If there is excess gum, we burn it away with a laser. First, we anaesthetise the gums, and then we burn away the excess gum.

Recovery period after gum correction

You can go home immediately after the treatment. Your gums may feel slightly sensitive at first. You can take paracetamol to relieve any discomfort. Your gums will generally heal within two weeks. This depends on the procedure, of course. Before you leave, we will explain how to care for your gums over the next few weeks.
