Is an implant-supported denture suitable for everyone?

An implant‑supported denture is suitable for individuals who have no remaining natural teeth and those who cannot tolerate a conventional denture due to the shape of their jaw.

Advantages of an implant-supported denture

  • The denture stays securely in place, much more so than a conventional denture
  • Restored chewing function in your jaws
  • Eat, speak, and laugh with complete confidence
  • Better sense of taste
  • The denture is firmly secured and cannot fall out
  • Easy to insert and remove

Procedure for placing the implant-supported denture

We insert your new denture with the utmost care at our dental practice in Amsterdam, and guide you through each step so you know exactly what to expect. If you have any questions about the procedure, don’t hesitate to contact us at 0202184257 or email info@ismile‑tandartspraktijk.nl, our team is happy to help.

Step 1: Initial consultation

During your first visit, we conduct a dental examination including an oral inspection and an overview X‑ray. We assess the quantity of jawbone you have, and our implantologist will prepare a tailored treatment plan, including a cost estimate, so there are no surprises. You’ll also be able to check your insurance coverage beforehand, since an implant‑supported denture is covered under basic Dutch health insurance.

Step 2: Implant placement

The implants to which your denture will be attached are placed first. We use local anaesthesia, or sedation if needed—so that our specialist can place the implants without causing pain. The implants are inserted through small incisions into the gums and jawbone, after which we close the wound with dissolvable sutures to allow the gums to heal.

Step 3: Healing period

It’s essential that the gums around the implants heal properly. This recovery phase can last between six and twelve weeks. During this time, a temporary denture will be placed so you can adjust to the change.

Step 4: Fitting the implant-supported denture

Once your gums have fully healed, your permanent implant‑supported denture, created to measure in a dental laboratory, will be placed. The implantologist will replace your temporary denture with the new one and click it firmly onto the implants. The fit will be meticulously checked, and you’ll be able to test it immediately by eating or drinking, though some tenderness is normal right after the procedure.

Step 5: Aftercare

You may now enjoy your new denture! A follow‑up appointment will be scheduled a few months later, typically three, six, or eleven months depending on the complexity of the procedure. We’ll review how your denture feels, take a new overview X‑ray, and carry out a thorough oral examination. From then on, you can confidently go about life with a beautiful, healthy smile.

When the permanent prosthesis is in place, we arrange a follow‑up based on the type of prosthesis, after three, six, or eleven months. During this check we take a new overview X‑ray and conduct a thorough oral exam.

Is an implant-supported denture fully covered by insurance?

The implant‑supported denture itself is covered under the basic health insurance. However, the placement of implants is not included in the basic package. We recommend contacting your insurer to clarify coverage details.
