Healthy gums are pink and do not bleed when brushed. Unfortunately, poor oral hygiene can cause inflammation of the gums. In this case, the gums are often redder and swollen, and they start to bleed when you brush and floss your teeth. It is important to treat gum inflammation immediately to prevent it from getting worse. Have you noticed that your gums are inflamed? If so, make an appointment at iSmile Dental Practice.

Types of gum inflammation

Gum inflammation can be either mild or severe. If the gums are only slightly inflamed, this is referred to as gingivitis. If the gums are severely inflamed, it is called periodontitis. We are happy to explain the difference to you.

Gingivitis

When the gums are slightly inflamed, this is often recognised by redness, swelling, bad breath and sensitivity to touch. For instance, your gums may bleed when you brush your teeth.

Periodontitis

If the initial inflammation is not detected and treated in time, it can develop into periodontitis. In this case, the bacteria will spread deeper into the gums and jawbone. An inflamed jawbone can result in tooth loss.

Symptoms of gum inflammation:

We have already described the most common symptoms above, but you will find a full list of symptoms below.

  • Red gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Lots of plaque, tartar and cavities
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold food
  • Bad breath
  • A bad taste in the mouth
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth

Causes of gum inflammation

Gums become inflamed when bacteria that accumulate in your mouth during the day are not removed in time. These bacteria then cause plaque. Fortunately, plaque can easily be removed by brushing your teeth twice a day. If you do not do this, however, plaque will build up on your teeth. This will then turn into tartar. This can only be removed by a dentist. If tartar is not removed in time, your gums can become inflamed.

Treating inflamed gums

Fortunately, this condition can usually be treated effectively. If you have gingivitis, you can often remedy the inflammation yourself by taking extra care of your teeth and gums. Brush your teeth twice a day, making sure to clean your gums as well.

However, if your gums are so inflamed that it is referred to as periodontitis, we recommend making an appointment at our practice. Here, we will remove the tartar to allow the gums to heal. If the jawbone is affected, we will work with you to draw up a treatment plan.
