Root canal treatment is performed in Amsterdam when the root canal of a tooth becomes inflamed. This can be caused by a cavity or a leaking filling, or by a hard blow or fall. It is important to have root canal inflammation treated quickly by a dentist because it will not heal on its own. Furthermore, the pain may worsen and the infection may spread to the jawbone. Thanks to our many years of experience, the treatment is virtually painless. Are you afraid of the dentist? Don’t worry, we specialise in treating anxious patients. Root canal treatment can be performed under light anaesthesia, and laughing gas is also available.

What is a root canal treatment?

Under local anaesthetic, the inflamed root canal is removed because inflamed tooth tissue cannot heal. If the inflammation is not removed, there is a risk that the infection will spread to the jawbone.
Is root canal treatment always possible?

Is it always possible to perform root canal treatment?

In some cases, it is not possible because there are other dental issues in addition to an inflamed root canal. For example, the tooth may need to be extracted. Your dentist will discuss this with you in detail and offer a suitable solution. One option is to fit a bridge so that you are not left with a gap in your mouth.

How does root canal treatment work?

To help you prepare for the procedure with peace of mind, we will explain it step by step.

Step 1: X-rays are taken.

Before treatment begins, we will take X-rays of your teeth to determine how many roots and root canals are present. This allows us to see how the roots are positioned so that we can work with the utmost care.

Step 2: Anaesthesia

Before opening the gum to clean the affected root canal, you can opt for a local anaesthetic. Once the nerve has died, this may not be necessary, but it is always your choice. We also offer laughing gas sedation, light anaesthesia, and sedative pills.

Step 3: Opening the tooth

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the dentist will make a small hole in the tooth. This small opening allows the dentist to remove the infected tissue from the tooth.

Step 4: Cleaning the root canals

To clean the canals, they are opened and widened with a special file. This is necessary to flush the canals with a disinfectant.

Step 5: Filling the canals

Once the canals have been carefully cleaned, they are filled.

In some cases, the tooth may be too badly damaged and require a crown or bridge.

Step 6: Aftercare

After root canal treatment, the tooth will heal on its own. It may feel sensitive for about four to five days afterwards. You can take painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol to relieve the discomfort.

Root canal treatment costs

The Dutch Healthcare Authority sets the national rates for root canal treatment. You can find the updated costs on our cost page.

Reimbursement for root canal treatment

Basic health insurance covers root canal treatment for patients under the age of 18. If you are 18 or older, whether the treatment is covered depends on your health insurer. We recommend contacting your insurer in advance to avoid any surprises.
