If you are afraid of the dentist, this may affect your treatment. However, you are not alone; approximately 25% of Dutch people share this same fear. Unlike most dental practices, we can treat you with sedatives. If you are very nervous or anxious about visiting the dentist, you may find it helpful to be provided with something to calm you down.

The intake appointment

To get to know each other before treatment begins, we schedule an intake interview. During this session, we won’t be treating your teeth; instead, our aim is to find out the cause of your fear. We then discuss the possible treatment methods with you. At iSmile, you can choose from laughing gas sedation, light anaesthesia or calming pills.

Our approach

At iSmile Tandartspraktijk, we believe it is important for our patients to know what to expect. Below, we explain our approach so that you know exactly what to await from us.

Laughing gas sedation

If you opt for this type of sedation, we place a mask over your nose through which you breathe in a mixture of oxygen and laughing gas. This combination ensures that you feel relaxed and do not experience any stress during the procedure. With laughing gas sedation, you remain fully conscious.

Light anaesthesia

If we need to perform more extensive treatment, you can opt for light anaesthesia. With this method, you are unconscious. Therefore, it is mandatory that an anaesthetist is present during the procedure. Once the treatment is over, you can recover in tranquility.

Sedative pills

If laughing gas sedation is not sufficient but you still want to remain conscious during the treatment, it is possible to opt for certain sedatives. In that case, you can opt for certain sedatives. One drug we use frequently is Dormicum. This drug ensures that you remain conscious but are largely unaware of the procedure.

Tips for feeling relaxed when you enter the practice

There are a number of things you can do to help you feel a little more relaxed when you arrive at the clinic:

  • Plan a fun activity to do after the treatment. This shifts the focus from the treatment to the activity.
  • Find some breathing exercises that you can do when you start to feel anxious in the treatment room.
  • Bring your smartphone and earphones so you can listen to music during the treatment. This helps you to focus more on the music than the treatment.

Tips for after the treatment

Make sure you schedule a new appointment immediately after your treatment. This will make it more difficult to postpone.

Breaks during treatment?

Are you afraid of the dentist? If so, please let us know when you make your appointment. We then schedule more time to allow for breaks. If you prefer to remain conscious during a procedure, you can easily indicate when you would like to take a break. We will pause the treatment so that you can relax.

Coverage for dental anxiety

The extent to which treatment is covered varies depending on your health insurance provider. For information about what is covered, please contact your provider.
