Brush your teeth twice a day, floss and rinse, and avoid eating too much sugar. This prevents cavities. However, there is something else you can do to protect them. You can have your teeth sealed at iSmile Tandartspraktijk. Having a sealant applied to your teeth reduces the risk of cavities.

Why seal your teeth?

At iSmile Tandartspraktijk, we can seal your teeth. We apply a thin layer of sealant to fill in the grooves on your teeth. This prevents bacteria and food debris from accumulating in these hard-to-reach areas. Your toothbrush and mouthwash cannot reach the depths of these grooves. Therefore, sealing your teeth and molars reduces the risk of cavities.

The advantages of tooth sealing

The most significant benefit is that it protects your teeth against cavities. The treatment is painless, and the sealant is invisible.

Disadvantages of tooth sealing

There are no real disadvantages to tooth sealing. The aftertaste of the treatment is the only potential drawback, but fortunately, this usually disappears quickly.

How we seal your teeth: the treatment

We seal your teeth in the following steps:

Step 1: clean and etch the teeth

It is important that the surface to be treated is clean first. The first step is therefore to clean your teeth. To ensure the sealant adheres well, the dentist roughens the surface with an acidic liquid or gel. This process is also known as ‘etching’.

Step 2: rinsing and drying

After a short period of time, we rinse away the liquid or gel with water. We often use an air or water spray for this. Any excess water is then removed from your mouth using a saliva ejector. As moisture prevents the sealant from adhering properly to the tooth, we then place cotton rolls in your mouth.

Step 3: sealing

Now that your teeth are clean and dry, we apply the sealant. This is a very thin liquid that fills the grooves and pits on your teeth to prevent bacteria from settling in these areas.

Step 4: hardening the sealant

As the sealant is still liquid, it can easily end up on your tongue or gums. We therefore harden it using a special blue lamp.

Step 5: final check

We carry out a final check to ensure that the sealant is in the right place. We then remove the saliva ejector and cotton rolls. The treatment is now complete.

Costs for tooth sealing

Basic insurance covers the cost of sealing permanent teeth for children. For adults, supplementary dental insurance may cover part of the costs. Please contact your insurance company for more information. The NZa sets annual rates for dental treatments such as tooth sealing. For an indication of the costs, please refer to our rate overview.
